<p><em>Video of the Moon transiting the Earth, as imaged by NASA&#8217;s <a href="http://epoxi.umd.edu/3gallery/vid_Earth-Moon.shtml">EPOXI spacecraft</a>, was made from the still images collected when EPOXI&#8217;s spacecraft imaged the Earth-Moon system on 28-29 May 2008. When the images were acquired, the spacecraft was just outside the orbit of the Earth and ahead of Earth by 31 million miles, 1/3 AU, making it as far from Earth as Mercury is from the Sun.</em>  </p>
<p>There are many forms of pattern recognition with visual, sound and touch being the more well known forms. Another less understood venue of pattern recognition, that often gets mixed up with fringe thinking, is the skill of interpreting weak electromagnetic fields and their physiological affect on the body and most likely other biological life. It is a similar process to that of developing the skill of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_echolocation">human echo location</a> but with weak electromagnetic fields. </p>
<p>My grandfather and father had the ability to sense weak electromagnetic fields in nature and used their skill for practical purposes such as finding buried metal water runoff culverts or looking for suitable sites to drill a water well. Over the years, I have come upon some insights about how designer matched electromagnetic fields from an electrical coil can replicate the weak field of molecular structures.  This is certainly an out- of-the-box concept but if you can sense these weak fields it really is no big deal. I wrote a short article on this <a href="http://helpfulwaves.com/blog/2011/11/22/notes-on-et/">here</a>.</p>
<p>So as not to get side tracked with these insights, I will circle back to an area that may be testable and that is Kepler 10b. My view is that the Kepler light curves (LC) may hold more precise information about transiting planets in addition to the visual light drops and may allow for identifying planets in noisy or quiet LCs. Jon Jenkins, Kepler Co-Investigator, put up on the Kepler web site some <a href="http://kepler.nasa.gov/multimedia/Audio/sonifications/">sonifications of light curves</a> he made. Two were of Kepler 10b, one raw data audio file and the other a processed audio file.  <em>My interest is in the Kepler 10b raw data sonification. </em></p>
<p>Playing the raw data file sounds like static to one untrained. In my case, I was able to extract what I believe to be a close approximation of Kepler 10b as a compound audio tone. <em>It is important to keep in mind that I am not keying into the audible tone but rather the electromagnetic field emanating from the audio coil in the speaker.</em> My thought is that this compound frequency match can be reversed engineered back into a visual representation, if desired, or used as a marker for planet transits in the Kepler SOC pipeline.  My view is that all transiting planets will have a similar signature. <p>This brings me back to the Earth view from the EPOXI spacecraft that <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLWb_T9yaDU">Sara Seager recently discussed </a>in her talk at the SETI institute. I believe the same process of sonification can be applied to the EPOXI photographic data shown at the top of the page by converting them into a high quality raw data audio sonfication.  I can then extract the description of Earth in terms of a compound electromagnetic frequency from the background noise. Knowing the Earth frequency, the extracted field could be reversed engineered for Earth-like planet searches in the Kepler SOC pipeline or other venues of searching for Earth-like habitable planets. <em>In this case, maybe a habitable Earth-like planet with a moon.  </em></p>

A mobius coil has interesting characteristics of electromagnetic field cancellation while still allowing the designer weak field to operate when in contact with the body. <p>Today is a special day of celebration as NASA&#8217;s Mars Curiosity was launched into orbit and performed a flawless separation on its way to Mars for an August 2012 landing in or near <a href="http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/mission/timeline/prelaunch/landingsiteselection/galecrater2/">Gale crater</a>. <p>In advance of the August landing, the weak area-specific molecular field of Mars can be replicated (what it feels like) by matching a Mars meteorite directly or extracting the field from an audio recording similar to the one made by the descending <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNTXkYoQZVk"> Huygens space probe</a> on Saturn&#8217;s moon <a href="http://helpfulwaves.com/blog/2011/07/17/experiencing-saturn%E2%80%99s-moon-titan-a-weak-field-replication/"> Titan</a>. I know this because of a particular pattern recognition ability I have with weak electromagnetic fields. It is a similar process to that of developing the skill of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_echolocation">human echolocation</a> but in this case it is the skill of interpreting weak electromagnetic fields and their physiological affect on the body and most likely other biological life.  </p>
<p>Unfortunately, the scientific community has not recognized the value of audio recordings for extracting these underlying weak fields. None of the Mars rovers were designed with microphones. This leaves us with matching the field of Mars meteorites for a close approximation of what Mars feels like. I extracted the weak field from a video of <em>Mars meteorite ALH84001</em>. This was a little tricky as only a short segment of the video had live audio near the specimen. Even so, I was able to make a good approximate field match. </p>

<p>If you were at Gale crater with the Mars rover Curiosity, this is what the area-specific field (composite molecular structure) would be similar to. This is a replication of Mars as a designer compound electromagnetic field emanating from an audio coil. You can recreate this field either by playing the mp3 audio file or by tuning material such as a glass, silicone wristband or inexpensive magnetic tape. <p>I am making my New Year wish list early this year. At the top of the list is a request that my work with subtle electromagnetic fields be looked at closely by the scientific community. <em> There is a fundamental aspect of electromagnetism that is being overlooked.</em> I know this because of a particular pattern recognition ability I have with weak electromagnetic fields. It is a similar process to that of developing the skill of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_echolocation">human echolocation</a> but in this case it is the skill of interpreting weak electromagnetic fields and their physiological affect on the body and most likely other biological life. Here are the insights:</p>
<p>+++ Designer compound lower frequency weak electromagnetic fields from an electrical audio coil can create a physiological effect on the body.</p>
<p>+++ The weak electromagnetic field of molecular structures can be matched as a compound electromagnetic field.
<ul>
<em>This is a key insight. The molecular field of a compound such as Ibuprofen can be matched and this designer electromagnetic field will have a similar affect on the body as the compound.</ul>
<p></em></p>
<p>+++ Materials considered nonmagnetic such as glass, silicone rubber, aluminum and plastics can be tuned to these matched fields.</p>
<p>+++ Audio recordings of area- specific electromagnetic fields in nature (the composite molecular structure of that area) can be matched and replicated from the audio signal moving through an electrical audio coil as a <em>precise electromagnetic field</em>.</p>
<p>Though this process may sound mysterious and like pseudo science to many of you reading this article it is as real as the ground under your feet. I find it quite puzzling that these aspects of electromagnetism are not common everyday knowledge. Which brings me back to exoplanets and the search for extraterrestrial life. <em> What I am discussing is also another venue for communication.</em> If nonmagnetic molecular structures can be tuned, as I know they can, by a designer compound electromagnetic frequency then information can be stored permanently.</p>
<p>Audio recordings such as those made by the descending Huygens space probe on Titan can reveal information about that Moon in terms of how it affects the human body. The weak molecular field of Apollo moon rocks can be matched. Apollo voice recordings of the astronauts while on the lunar surface can offer insight on the area-specific weak fields of the landing sites. The molecular electromagnetic field of Mars meteorites can be matched. Kepler light curves that have been converted into a sonification format can be analyzed and exoplanet transit signals extracted.  </p>
<p>I leave you with this final thought, there may be more information to be gleaned in the background signals from our galaxy and other galaxies that are in a form that must be matched, via pattern recognition, and extracted similar to the process I am sharing with you today. ET may be both calling home and calling us right now but we do not recognize the signals.  </p>

<p><a href="http://www.planethunters.org/site_guide">Planet Hunters</a> assists the <a href="http://kepler.nasa.gov/">Kepler</a> science team in identifying <a href="http://www.planethunters.org/candidates">planet candidates</a> and <a href="http://talk.planethunters.org/collections/CPHS0002a8/discussions/DPH100i8xr">eclipsing binary</a> (EB) star systems that were not flagged by the powerful NASA computers using sophisticated search algorithms. It is about using our human pattern recognition skills to analyze the Kepler <a href="http://www.planethunters.org/site_guide#video">light curves</a> looking deeper into these patterns for clues that their computers failed to see.</p>
<p>In the eclipsing binary animation of two stars orbiting each other above you can see a representation of its light curve as two drops in the graph. Generally one is more shallow than the other. This is a tell or clue that the light curve is indicating that you are looking at an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_star">eclipsing binary</a> star system. However, with <em>shallow transit eclipsing binary stars</em> there presence is often hidden within the light curve with no noticeable clues as shown in the light curve below for Kepler ID 3836375. It is listed in the eclipsing binary catalog <a href="http://astro4.ast.villanova.edu/aprsa/kepler/">Prsa et al</a> as a <a href="http://astro4.ast.vill.edu/MONS/binaries.htm">Detached EB</a>.</p>

<p>When analyzing the light curve with a <a href="http://nsted.ipac.caltech.edu/applications/ETSS/Kepler_index.html">periodogram generator</a>, the pattern for an eclipsing binary surfaces.</p>

<p>Though at or near the limits of visual pattern recognition, these shallow transit EB candidates continue to be identified within the noisy light curves at Planet Hunters. A collection of over 20 candidates can be viewed <a href="http://talk.planethunters.org/collections/CPHS0002p8">here</a> with varying degrees of visual clues. One of my favorites in the collection of shallow transit eclipsing binary stars is shown below. Notice that it has no obvious visual clues. However, there were very subtle hints in the light curve pattern that warranted further investigation.</p>

<p>There may be another way of &#8220;<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/seti-institute/life-at-the-seti-institut_b_1062830.html">Deciphering Celestial Signals</a>&#8221; using current technology of radio telescopes. The article written by Dr Gerry Harp at the SETI Institute discusses new ways of interpreting these signals for signs of extraterrestrial life with the Paul Allen Telescope Array. <em>Because of the long distance, the alien&#8217;s message is distorted and buried in static. The static can be overcome by listening for a long time or building a larger telescope. Overcoming the distortion is still pretty-much an unsolved problem which I find quite fascinating.   </em> &#8220;We use computer tools to expand what it means to &#8220;look&#8221; at the data. By doing something we call &#8220;projecting the data,&#8221; we look at the data from a different angle or in a different light&#8221;.</p>
<p>What is not commonly known, is there is another method to look for signs of extraterrestrial life but we will have to got back to the Apollo lunar missions where these signals are frozen in time as astronaut voice recordings. Analyzing these recordings in a new light offers a novel venue to glean information that is lying undiscovered within the electromagnetic frequencies that were radioed back to earth. Researchers can then apply these same techniques for deciphering celestial signals. <em>The key is human pattern recognition of electromagnetic fields that can eventually be designed into search algorithms </em></p>

<p>Instead of debating the possibility that this type of pattern recognition exists, I will put together an example for others to validate that will show the approximate times the Apollo 12 Command Service Module (CSM) Yankee Clipper passes overhead the astronauts who are donning their spacesuits inside the Lunar Module (LM) Intrepid which is now is resting on the lunar surface. The maximum shift in the electromagnetic frequency that indicates the presence of the orbiting CSM will occur shortly after it passes overhead and will  gradually decrease until communication is lost ( loss of signal LOS) as the CSM moves on to the lunar farside.</p>
<p>This is all possible because of the <a href="http://history.nasa.gov/ap12fj/audio/audioindex.htm">Apollo 12 Bernie Scrivener</a> audio tapes recorded at the <a href="http://www.honeysucklecreek.net/index.html">Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station</a> Canberra, Australia.</p>

<p>Though we are listening to the recorded audio of the astronauts, what is being analyzed are the audio signals moving through the electrical coil of the speaker creating an electromagnetic field and not the mechanical sound waves generated by the speaker. Within this field is a gradual increase in the field frequency, <em>perhaps similar to a doppler shift</em>, that indicates the presence of the Yankee Clipper as it passes overhead.  Below is a chart of the orbits of the Yankee Clipper. I circled the landing site of Apollo 12 LM Intreped in blue and the loss of signal (LOS) location is marked in yellow.</p>

<p>Here is the audio segment of the voice communications made by the <a href="http://helpfulwaves.com/a12a_114_28_14_to_115_15_39-2.mp3">Apollo 12 astronauts</a> as an mp3 audio file. The transcript of the communications is below where astronauts Pete Conrad and Alan Bean are donning there spacesuits in the LM Intrepid as Richard Gordan is passing overhead in the CSM. I marked the approximate times where the frequency begins to shift upwards, rises to a maximum and then gradually decrease as the Yankee Clipper passes out of communication line of sight.</p>

<p><strong>[Frequency has shifted down to base line] </strong></p>
<p>The key insight is that the electromagnetic frequencies, in the form of voice communications, contain information (frequency shifts) that indicate the approach and transit of a spacecraft 60 nautical miles above the surface. Though I do not understand the underlying physics as to why this is occurring, detecting the <em>doppler-like shift</em> in the frequency in the audio recordings, as subtle as they are, is possible. Researchers now know where to look for the data. The  compound electromagnetic <em>frequency matches extracted from the audio recording</em> indicating the presence of the orbiting Yankee Clipper can be requested by researchers investigating this process. </p>

<p><em>A 1901 Astrophysical Journal paper by Pickering provides a list of sixty four new variables, one of which &#8212; a star in the constellation Lyra &#8212; was found using the method above on a plate from July 13, 1899. Examination of this plate by one of Pickering&#8217;s staff, Williamina Fleming, revealed a short-period, high amplitude star (<a href="http://www.aavso.org/vsots_rrlyr">aavso.org</a>).<br />
</em>  <em>In nine years, she (Fleming) catalogued more than 10,000 stars. During her work, she discovered 59 gaseous nebulae, over 310 variable stars, and 10 novae. In 1907, she published a list of 222 variable stars she had discovered (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williamina_Fleming">wikipedia</a>).<br />
</em></p>
<p>&#8220;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RR_Lyrae_variable">RR Lyrae variables</a> are periodic variable stars, commonly found in globular clusters, and often used as standard candles to measure galactic distances.&#8221; It is roughly estimated that out of the 200 billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy only 85,000 may be RR Lyrae stars. &#8220;They are extensively used in globular cluster studies, and also used to study chemical properties of older stars.&#8221; (wikipedia)   More on RR Lyrae stars at <a href="http://earthsky.org/space/fritz-benedict-a-more-accurate-yardstick-for-cosmic-distances">earthsky.org</a>.</p>
<p>The Kepler spacecraft is monitoring a section of our galaxy that consists of approximately 150,000 stars.  In a science paper <a href="http://arxiv.org/abs/1007.3928">J.M. Benkő et al </a>dated 22 July 2010, the Kepler science team has identified only 29 of them as RR Lyrae stars, and of those only 14 exhibit <a href="http://www.aavso.org/now-less-mysterious-blazhko-effect-rr-lyrae-variables">Blazhko modulations</a>. <em>It now appears that Planet Hunters has found another RR Lyrae star with Blazhko modulation.<br />

<p>Pattern recognition of light curves at <a href="http://www.planethunters.org/science">Planet Hunters</a> has helped the <a href="http://kepler.nasa.gov/">Kepler</a> science team find an unlisted RR Lyrae star. It was hiding, so to speak, in the star field background presenting itself as light contamination in the light curve above. Pattern recognition is all about acting on your hunches. This light curve seemed unusual and I took the next step of running the star&#8217;s light curve data through a periodogram generator and this is what presented itself:</p>

<p>When you see this type of pattern in a periodogram, it is a strong indication of the star being an RR Lyrae. Kian Jek, known as Kianjin, at Planet Hunters forum is a co-discoverer of this star.  Without his taking an interest in educating members about RR Lyrae stars and what to look for, this find would have been passed by. Kian analyzed the light curve I submitted in the &#8220;<a href="http://talk.planethunters.org/objects/APH23036769/discussions/DPH100ia3u">Discussions</a>&#8221; section and this is what he came up with: </p>
<p><em>I was pretty sure the RRL pattern is in the star itself, just masked by errors in photometry and/or post processing. Here&#8217;s how the undetrended but Kepler processed light curve looks like, Q1 to Q3:<br />

<p><em>It&#8217;s strange that Q1 doesn&#8217;t show any pulsations. Q2 is definitely distorted by the fp16 problem, but even Q3 has some funky distortions of its own. So what I did was to take the raw flux from Q3 alone, detrended it myself and here&#8217;s what I got &#8211; an RRL-like light curve complete with Blazhko modulation!</em></p>

<p>Here is what Dr Chris Lintott (Zookeeper) had to say about this discovery:</p>
<p><em>Good news! I&#8217;ve heard back from our friends in the Kepler team, and this star is interesting and indeed new to them, so this is another <a href="http://talk.planethunters.org/search?search=keywords%3Adiscovery">#discovery</a> for Planet Hunters! Congratulations, Tom128 (Thomas Lee Jacobs) for spotting it, and Kianjin (Kian Jek) for the analysis. They&#8217;re going to do a detailed analysis &#8211; indeed, they&#8217;ve already started &#8211; and keep us informed. Obviously if it makes a paper then full credit will go to you two.</p>
<p>Some extra details; the reason that the variation appears and disappears between quarters might be because it&#8217;s a background star; this would explain the small amplitude and if the processing used on different quarters included different parts of the image then that would explain why it comes and goes.</p>
<p>They also say &#8220;Any new RRLs &#8211; especially the modulated ones &#8211; are of great value and very much appreciated! Kepler provides excellent light curves and delivers surprising new discoveries on <a href="http://talk.planethunters.org/search?search=keywords%3ARRLyrae">#RRLyrae</a> stars,&#8221; so do tag anything you find. As Robert Szabo, one of the scientists says : &#8216;Congratulations to this precious discovery&#8217;.<br />
</em></p>
<p>Both Kian Jek and Dr. Szabo suspected that the RR Lyrae star that was presenting itself in the original light curve was manifesting itself as light contamination. Here is what Chris Lintott had to say:</p>

<p>Note &#8211; You can see the light contamination in the original light curve as Blazhko modulation in the four right columns of the chart.</p>
<p><em>As he says, it indeed confirms that the RRL star is not the originally proposed and observed 3448787. In the other figure, below, he shows a fainter star (Kp~17.6) which I suspect is the variable. Its <strong>KIC ID is 3448777</strong>. The third brighter star forming a &#8216;line&#8217; with 3448787 and 3448777 toward the upper right corner is 3448767. Unfortunately neither 3448777 nor 3448767 were observed by Kepler, but we&#8217;re going to see what we can do to change that.</em></p>

<p>This brings me back to pattern recognition at Planet Hunters and RR Lyrae star clues in the light curves as light contamination. I will show two examples of Kepler light curves indicating that a RR Lyrae star is somewhere in the star field contaminating the light curve of interest.  The first is the one already posted and discussed in this article. The second is from an already known RR Lyrae star.</p>

<p>Notice that both light curves have a thick line running along the lower edge of the curve along with  modulated pulsations, though distorted. These are clues that an RR Lyrae may lie in the star field that is contaminating the light curve.  In the case of the second example, it is the grandmother of all the RR Lyrae star types discovered by Williamina Fleming on July 13, 1899. </p>

<p>One of the issues with analyzing Kepler light curves (LC) is seeing planet transit light drops in noisy or quiet LCs such as the one below. Kepler uses special algorithms and the powerful NASA computers to screen these light curves but there are limits to their usefulness.</p>

<p>Kepler 10b is a celebrated planet discovery using algorithms to detect the drop in the light curve indicating a transiting planet. As a side note, there is much more follow-on analysis to verify a planet transit but you can see below a well defined drop in the light curve.</p>

<p>The process of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonification">sonification</a> is changing the medium of a LC from a visual representation of the star to that of an audio representation. Here is the light curve for Kepler 10b, shown above, as an audio file that you can listen to. This is the <a href="http://helpfulwaves.com/Kepler10Braw.mp3">raw data file</a>, unprocessed and put together by <a href="http://kepler.nasa.gov/multimedia/Audio/sonifications/">Jon Jenkins, Kepler Co-Investigator</a>.</p>
<p>At <a href="http://www.planethunters.org/science">Planet Hunters</a>, citizen scientists are asked to use their pattern recognition skills to identify transiting planets and other unique star configurations. It is all about the human mind being able to penetrate deeper into the light curves looking for clues that the computer cannot recognize. Here is a short article at Planet Hunters I wrote about a <a href="http://talk.planethunters.org/discussions/DPH100i9wd">novel way of finding eclipsing binary stars </a>with few visual clues. What is quite interesting is that in the two examples shown the pattern recognition cues are are very subtle. However, the analysis of the LCs clearly shows eclipsing binary star characteristics. Knowing that similar light curves may indicate eclipsing binary stars these specific light curves can be closely analyzed to see if a search algorithm can be built around them.</p>
<p>This brings me back to Kepler 10b and the sonification of its light curve. On my web site, I discuss how it is possible to use the mind&#8217;s unique ability to perform pattern recognition with electromagnetic fields. I know this because of a particular pattern recognition ability I have with these weak fields. It is a similar process to that of developing the skill of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_echolocation">human echolocation</a> but in this case it is the skill of interpreting weak electromagnetic fields and their physiological affect on the body and most likely other biological life.</p>
<p>My view is that the frequency for a transiting planet, as a subset of its LC sonification, can be extracted from the raw audio file. <em>I am talking about the electromagnetic field created by the electrical audio coil and not the mechanical sound waves generated by the speaker.</em>  Knowing the compound electromagnetic frequency indicating a transiting planet, researchers can reverse engineer this frequency back into the visual light curve spectrum and a viable algorithm can be designed. A breakthrough in analyzing noisy or quiet LCs for transiting planets may be possible.</p>
<p>Here is the transit frequency for Kepler 10b extracted from the raw data file.  My hope is that researchers will perform the reverse engineering on this compound electromagnetic field that can be used in algorithms for detecting similar planet transits. There may be a unique electromagnetic frequency signature that applies to all planetary transits that can be extracted from the sonification of Kepler light curves.</p>

<p>Nature responds to designer weak electromagnetic fields. That is, these fields have a physiological affect on the body and no doubt on other living organisms. The key is the frequency match. What is not commonly known is that the molecular structure of glass, aluminum, silicone rubber and plastics can be tuned to the same applied electromagnetic field. Their molecular field is enhanced (in a permanently excited state) and this enhanced field has the same physiological affect on the body as the applied field.</p>
<p>I know this because of a particular pattern recognition ability I have with weak electromagnetic fields. It is a similar process to that of developing the skill of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_echolocation">human echolocation</a> but in this case it is the skill of interpreting weak electromagnetic fields and their physiological affect on the body and most likely other biological life.</p>
<p>This is contrary to how magnetization is thought to operate as the above materials are considered non magnetic, but none-the-less, it is a true statement. In fact, they can be tuned permanently using power levels of less than six watts. And just like a magnetized item, such as a credit card magnetic strip with coded information, the tuning can be corrupted when in the presence of another strong field. The item can also be re-tuned again. </p>
<p>This brings me to mosquito repellent and malaria. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is very interested in finding new and innovative ways to stop the spread of malaria. One of the oldest methods is a simple mosquito net treated with or without chemicals. Here is a short excerpt from their <a href="http://www.gatesfoundation.org/topics/Pages/malaria.aspx#">web page</a>:</p>

<p>Insecticide-treated bed nets and indoor spraying of insecticides in homes has been a successful approach for controlling mosquitoes. However, mosquitoes are becoming more resistant to today’s insecticides. We’re supporting the development of new active ingredients and products that combat insecticide resistance. &#8221;</p>

<p>My proposal is that we move beyond chemicals or perhaps work in synergy with them using designer electromagnetic fields that I can help put together. Once the field match is made, items such as mosquito netting, clothing and other materials can be tuned to the designer frequency. Simple electrical coil devices could also be designed that would create a mosquito repellent electromagnetic field, perhaps powered by a mp3 portable audio player. We are talking about very inexpensive research and development. I can match the weak fields of chemicals that currently repel mosquitoes, so why not start there?    </p>
